In 1912, a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School, published the first use of muscle monitoring against external force in tests used to trace spinal nerve damage. Muscle innervation research, analysis and developments continued and in the 1960s and '70s, neurolymphatic, neurovascular and Chinese meridian flow and acupuncture theory were incorporated as it was found the latter could also tonify or sedate under or over facilitated (energised) muscles, i.e. muscles not receiving optimum messages from the nervous system. In 1980, the evolving modality of kinesiology was brought to Australia. It was now well recognised that kinesiology could be used as a biofeedback system, i.e. a device that can increase awareness of a physiological state by "feeding back" information from the body about the physical, emotional or energetic state.
The interlacing of western physiology with the Chinese law of five-elements (Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, Wood each being responsible for certain systems, organs, muscles, emotions, etc) produced the holographic muscle monitoring system for accessing all aspects of the being, from anatomy and physiology to emotions and belief systems. The Australian College of Complementary Medicine (ACCM) was established in 2000, adding to these kinesiology techniques new units such as vibrationary healing systems and chakra hologram balancing. ACCM achieved international accreditation and was the first to gain full Australian Government accreditation in Kinesiology (Holistic) as well as their specialised Sports Kinesiology stream. Kinesiology is today a holistic complementary medicine based on the hologram principle in that it treats every cell in the body as the whole body. If one cell is out of balance or malfunctioning, the whole body can feel the ripples of stress emanating from that imbalance. In this way, an emotional stress may manifest physically in the anatomy or physiology of the body or a physical ailment can negatively affect a person's emotional or spiritual wellbeing.
Muscles not only have might but memory and meaning
Kinesiology practitioners access stresses in a person's physical, emotional or energetic state by having a client contract certain muscles while they assess the effectiveness of neuromuscular transmission or 'brain messages' being transmitted to the muscle. Results of the muscle testing are in regard to thoughts on a specific issue, as discussed at the beginning of the balance. If there are interruptions in the energy of the brain messages to the muscle, the practitioner asks questions as to why that issue may be causing such a result; what are the blockages to clear transmission? The answer could be structural, emotional, energetic or a combination. Either way, the root cause can be flushed out, allowing healing from the ill effects of the issue to begin. The muscle testing we do is not for strength but for integrity, that is, effectiveness of communication between mind and body. Muscles can themselves hold or direct us to where a stress is held within the body and therefore provide the key to releasing that stress.
What we think, we become
By changing the way we think about an issue, we change the efficiency of messages being sent to our body in regard to that issue. For example, when given bad news, your body may instantly slump into an uncomfortable posture or you may begin to feel true physical pain or sickness in your gut. You may, even a long time after receiving the news, remain in this physical state if the underlying emotional stress remains untreated. However, if over time you can work through or change the way you think about such news, your physical state should be able to correct itself.
We are physical and energetic beings
This mind-body affect is evident in differences seen between muscle testing done at the beginning and repeated at the end of a kinesiology balance, following discussion of the issue and corrections having been applied to resolve negative impacts of the issue. When a client can see and feel changes in their body function brought about by a change in thinking, it is a powerful reminder that, in many cases we do have choice and we have the ability to heal ourselves through understanding of and trust in our mind-body connection and natural rhythm. Our lives do not always need major overhauls; sometimes just a tune-up will get us back on track and often, tune-ups can keep major overhauls from being required. Kinesiology can assist you in understanding and coping with either measure and is therefore an effective modality for dealing with the root cause of day-to-day stress or a long-standing imbalance.
