REIKI means 'life force energy' or 'universal energy'
What drew me to reiki?
I found it to be an easily accessible, relaxing way to meditate on what is important in the moment, especially in relation to health. Hippocrates said, "The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well." Reiki encourages this innate healing force by allowing time in deep relaxation to focus on how we are thinking, feeling and therefore, performing. |
Reiki is a healing meditation developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist, Mikao Usui. There are numerous attempts at translation but a broad acceptance would be life force or universal energy, similar to chi in Chinese medicine or prana in yoga.
Taking a moment to be still and quiet, reiki allows us to tap into the energy within and around us, that which is not seen but which can enhance what we want to see and be. Each cell in the body emits a frequency, a vibration which contributes to creating subtle energy fields around the physical body. The hands-on (gentle, still touch) or hovering (above the body) of reiki treatment assists in alleviating disturbances or imbalances in these energetic fields which may result from upsets to our physiological or belief systems through stress, inadequate diet, illness, trauma or injury. A high vibrational and universal energy (not the practitioner's own) is transferred to the client's body from the practitioner's hands to accelerate deep relaxation, connection to our innate healing abilities and to promote awareness and acceptance of our true self through the peeling away of physical and emotional stresses. Reiki is an effective, deeply restful energy-balancing technique which also threads well as a complement to other energetic, mind-body based modalities such as kinesiology and sound healing, as well as alongside western medicine treatment or recovery. |
REIKI can assist with
- receiving and emitting unconditional love
- releasing and changing your reactions to stress
- inviting deep relaxation to reset the nervous system, especially in accessing our parasympathetic rest-digest component to combat exhaustion and fatigue
- encouraging the body's natural healing abilities, especially post injury or surgery
- improving patterns and quality of sleep
- pain relief, including reduced severity of headache and back pain
- strengthening immunity and health through mind-body awareness
- balancing energy and concentration levels
- detoxification, e.g. following nutritional changes or antibiotics use
- emotional and spiritual clearing that allows for inner trust and soul (re)connection
- promoting a sense of self-awareness and belonging
- stimulating creativity centres to reinvigorate inspiration and motivation
- moving through trauma or unresolved grief
- finding a sense of peace and calm - this can be especially effective when combined with sound healing and/or chakra balancing
- acknowledging and believing that being you and seeking peace and growth in your own way, at your own pace, is enough
REIKI precepts
The five precepts taught to students of Usui as guidelines of the practice are based in the present moment and therefore, prefaced by,

= healing around destress~compromise
= healing around objectivity~reflection = healing around appreciation~positivity = healing around compassion = healing around impact of our actions~connectedness |
